2005 WINNERS

CAMBRIDGESHIRE COMPOSTING PARTNERSHIP

Cambridgeshire Composting Partnership is a partnership which brings together the County and District Councils, HDRA and the National Trust's Black Gold Project, to promote composting on all scales throughout Cambridgeshire.  Building on their highly successful Master Composter Programme, which has provided over 4,000 hours of voluntary work since 2001, the partnership provides outreach through the community which supports the home, community and centralised composting services offered by the County and District Councils.  The establishment of the partnership and their outreach programme has played a fundamental part in increasing householder participation resulting in the recycling rate for Cambridgeshire rising from 29 % to 44 % over the past 18 months.

The judges were particularly impressed by the way the partnership brought together a broad range of organisations from the public, private and community sectors to promote composting on all levels.  The high levels of localised promotion and education stood out as examples of how a co-ordinated approach which promotes all scales of composting through a variety of channels resulting in a substantial rise in local recycling rates.

Veolia Environmental Services, the Group's waste management arm, is a UK leader in integrated waste management solutions to local authorities, business and industry.  We offer a comprehensive range of services, including collection, recycling, composting, treatment and disposal to over six million residents and commercial customers.

Veolia ES Hampshire Limited won the contract for Hampshire's municipal waste disposal in the mid-1990s. We work with the county council, the 11 district authorities and the 2 unitary authorities of Southampton and Portsmouth in a partnership known as Project Integra.  In the year 2000, all the partnership councils were awarded Beacon Status in recognition of their achievement of a sustainable waste management system.

Hampshire's waste management infrastructure is now established and includes the development of three open windrow composting sites across the county, which have a capacity for nearly 100,000 tonnes of green waste per annum. This green waste is diverted from landfill via Household Waste Recycling Centres, kerbside collection schemes and direct deliveries.

The peat-free organic soil conditioner produced is approved by the Soil Association and sold under the Pro-GrowTM brand. Our product has been used in many high profile national projects, including the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey, and the Canary Wharf development in London.
